The Helsinki World Championships 100 metre silver and bronze medallists, Michael Frater of Jamaica and Kim Collins of St Kitts and Nevis, are the latest Caribbean sprinters to confirm their place in next year’s Commonwealth Games.
The Caribbean Net News also reports that Cayman Islands’ 200 metre specialist Cydonie Mothersill will also face the starter in Melbourne.
Mr Frater and Mr Collins will join world record holder Asafa Powell of Jamaica in the event.
A coach of the three top-class sprinters, Stephen Francis, has said his charges will definitely run in Melbourne, as well as Mr Powell racing in the Telstra A-Series before the Games begin.
"We're definitely coming," Mr Frater said, following his silver medal run in the worlds, when he was asked if he would join training partner Mr Powell in the 100 metres in Melbourne.
"Right now the coaches are planning for the Commonwealth Games and we will be coming out a month before to race on the Australian circuit. I've never been to Australia so I want to go there and we're all looking forward to it," Mr Frater added.
Sprint hero of St Kitts and Nevis, Kim Collins, who was the 2003 world champion and achieved bronze in his Helsinki sprint, has indicated the Games are on his radar, along with coach Glen Mills of Jamaica and his group of champion sprinters including world junior 200 metre record holder, Usain Bolt.
