Melbourne 2006 and ACGA shocked by cycling accident in Germany

19 Jul 05 06:46
Melbourne 2006 cyclingThe Chairman of Melbourne 2006 and the Australian Commonwealth Games Association President have expressed shock and sorrow at the tragic road accident in Germany which claimed the life of Australian Road Cycling gold medal hopeful Amy Gillett.

Mr Ronald Walker and Mr Sam Coffa said in a joint statement that “We are deeply saddened by this terrible event.”

Ms Gillett, 29, from Mt Clear, near Ballarat, was training with her team for a cycling meet in Thueringen, southern Germany, when the accident occurred.

On the Australian Cycling Federation’s Website, Ms Gillett cited her career ambition as winning gold at the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, something her coach Mr John Beasley said was a real possibility.

“It is heartbreaking that ambition will never be realised,” said Mr Walker and Mr Coffa.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Amy’s family, her team members, their families and the Australian cycling fraternity.

“We would also like to wish her team members a speedy recovery.”

Five of the Australian national women's team have also been seriously injured in the accident.
