After the disappointment of missing out of the Manchester Commonwealth Games, Helen made the move from Christchurch to Jan Cameron's stable of elite swimmers at the North Shore Swim Club.

She became an Olympian at the age of 18 when she attended the Sydney Games but suffered a form slump in 2002 that saw her fail to adjust to new qualifying standards.

Since making the move, Helen's times have improved greatly - she smashed the FINA qualifying standard for the Athens Olympics by nearly two seconds at the national championships in April 2004.

She was named the Most Outstanding Sportswoman in 2001 at the Sir Richard Hadlee Sports Trust's Canterbury Sportsperson of the Year Awards.
