Kevin was just 19 when he was chosen to play a Test Rugby League in 1987. In his Test debut against Papa New Guinea he scored 20 points from three tries and four goals, to set a new record for a Kiwi making his international debut. He joined Wigan and went on to play in 22 games for Wigan in 1987/88; then back to play with Manly in 1991-92 (24 games); then 1992-96, Iro played 122 games forn the Leeds Rhinos; briefly back to play in Auckland then back to England to link up with St. Helens. After 83 games for Saints from 1999-01, Kevin Iro retired. Even though he appeared in 31 Tests for New Zealand, Iro was honoured to captain the Cook Islands in the 2000 World Cup, then moved to Rarotonga and retired from rugby until recently.
Kevin Iro, who at 37 continues to show young aspiring players why he is ?the Beast?, is maintaining impressive fitness and conditioning. Kevin had a glittering league career with the Auckland Warriors, Leeds Rhinos, Wigan, Manly and Mariners (NZ) and the St Helens Saints where he eventually retired. Kevin came back from retirement to play for Cook Islands in the IRB 7s in Wellington recently. |
