Australia's Heath Francis put aside the distractions of four false starts by competitors in the Men’s 200m T46 Final for Elite Athletes with a Disability (EAD), to take the gold medal at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Nigeria’s Godwin Mbakara was tipped as race favourite but succumbed to second place and the speed of Francis, who claimed for gold with a 22.76 second finish in lane 5.
A post-race disqualification for Mbakara eventually awarded the silver to South Africa’s David Roos, with Nigerian Vitalis Lanshima taking bronze.
The 200m T46 race features athletes with amputations, and is one of 12 gold medals on offer for EAD competitors at the Games.
Twenty-five-year-old Francis is considered a veteran of the sport after winning bronze in Athens 2004 and silver in Sydney 2000.
Commenting on the high standard of competition in the category, Francis said “I had to work really hard the whole way.”
