Sean Finning has peddled
Australia into a leading position
for the Men's Point Race final.
Australian Sean Finning accumulated the highest tally to go through to the Men's Points Race final in the first heat of the qualifying round at Melbourne Park's velodrome.
The 21-year old Victorian collected 34 points, the highest number achieved from either heat.
"It was a good opportunity to get out on the track, loosen the legs a little and just see how everything is working," said Finning.
Malaysia's Mohd Jasmin Bin Ruslan qualified second with 30 points, followed by England's Ian Stannard with 27.
New Zealand’s Greg Henderson, who was the favourite in this qualifying group, was fifth with 23 points but is still a big chance for a place on the podium.
Also through to the final from heat one are: Mark Richard Kelly from the Isle of Man (25 points), Canadian Martin Gilbert (23), Scotland's James McCallum (21), Durwan Benjamin from South Africa (20), Welsh Ross Sander (12), Jonathan Matthew Bellis from the Isle of Man (7) and Emile Abraham from Trinidad and Tobago (4).
Meanwhile, Scotland's Evan Oliphant collected 29 points to finish first in the second heat, one point ahead of New Zealander Richard Bowker.
Mark Cavendish, who is a hot contender for a medal in his first Commonwealth Games final, took third place with 25 points.
Also qualified for the final are Matthew Brammeier from Wales (25 points), New Zealand's Hayden Roulston (23), Canadian Zack Bell (11), English Andy Tennant (7), Australian Peter Dawson (6), Geraint Thomas from Wales (6), England's Edward Clancy (5) and Garth Conrad Thomas from South Africa (1).
Both pairs of riders from Barbados and Guyana did not qualify.
