The Women’s Seated Shot Put Elite Athletes with a Disability (EAD) event shapes as an open affair, with the gold medal decided in today's Final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
Seasoned campaigner Njideka Iyiazi of Nigeria, who threw a world best 10.12m in the F58 category at Athens in 2004, comes into the event as the favourite.
Twenty-year-old Helen Teioli of Solomon Islands is sure to be hot on her heels, having achieved a personal best throw of 8m earlier in the season and looking to be in good form.
Other contenders to watch are Jamaicans Sylvia Grant and Coleen Morrison.
Seasoned shot putter Grant, who has competed at five Paralympics (Seoul, Barcelona, Atlanta, Sydney and Athens), is the most experienced athlete in the field and could well spring a surprise in the heady atmosphere of the MCG today.
