Hopes lift for medals

A high standard is expected in the fifth day of Weightlifting, with special performances anticipated in the Women's 69kg and Men's 85kg events.

The Women's gold medal favourite will be Jeane Lassen, who leads a strong Canadian contingent into the event.

However, Lassen will not have things all her own way, as Monica Laishram Devi of India and Janet Thelermont from the Seychelles will provide strong opposition.

Therlermont hopes to avoid a repeat of her Manchester Games performance where she failed to finish the event.

The Men's 85kg should also be a strong contest, with the stand-out lifter being Pakistan's Shuja-Qud-Din Malik.

Other serious medal contenders will be Simplice Ribouem from Cameroon, and the Indian lifters Tajinder Singh and Satheesha Rai.
