Saville will carry the flag for
Australia at the Opening
Ceremony.
Veteran race walker Jane Saville is set to be the face of Australia’s Commonwealth Games efforts after being crowned Team Flag Bearer for the highly-anticipated Opening Ceremony.
The Manchester gold medallist was a popular choice for the honour, after her heartbreaking disqualification in the 20km Walk at the Sydney Olympics.
It's seen as recognition of Saville's outstanding track and field record, the pinnacle of which was being crowned number one Female Race Walker in 2004.
Saville is a genuine chance for Commonwealth Games gold, having twice taken out top Commonwealth Games honours
"I'm so proud to be representing Australia at my fourth Commonwealth Games," said Saville.
"Not many people get to carry their national flag in an opening ceremony."
"It's just great to be part of the team and to be given this honour," she said.
Swimmer Adam Pine, who will also be competing in his fourth Commonwealth Games, will recite the Athlete's Oath.
The Australian team is raring to go with Saville at the helm, having earlier been welcomed into the Commonwealth Games Athlete’s Village with a rousing flag-raising ceremony.
